“Home” for every individual is different. One that you dream of living in, one you have lived in your childhood, one your are living in, or for some its who you are living in with that makes a home. Home is a representation of oneself, thier heritage and who they aspire to be. Home - for me is my grandparents home in South India. It’s a way of living that is passed on from generation to generation tweaked with modern times. The house surrounded by green- coconut trees, banana plants. Memories of my grandfather always waiting at the front porch of the house sitting in his arm chair. The wooden carvings of the door, window and pillars striking a beautiful combination with the Attangudi printed tiled flooring. The central courtyard was the main heart of the house where everyone came together. Small elements like the brass utensils, pickle jars to the granite stone statues of god and godesses. Banana and coconut leaves used as baskets or screens. The aroma from the kitchen flooding the house all around. The heart of the house - the courtyard where we all children played, while my grandmother sat and filled up the pickle jars or creating beautiful kolam designs on the floor for festivals, while my grandfather would be on the swing overlooking the courtyard. People make memories.
House of Nostalgia - is a blend of old and new. A home based on memories and south indian roots and heritage. An amalgamation of the snippets of the memories of the ancestoral home, with an infusion of modern take on experiencing a space , light and keeping things open, blending the inside and outside. The house is designed in a square format with the central focus as the courtyard around which the rest of the spaces are designed. The other spaces like the dining room, living room, kitchen, bar, powder room and bedrooms are placed as induviual spaces around the courtyard. Each space is kept separate so the space looks open and breathable, one is able to see the green gardens between these spaces. The bar and kitchen are open. The dining and living room are enclosed with wooden jali pivoted doors to make them semi open spaces. The concept was to keep the space open and connect the inside with the outside. The pool surrounds the bar and living room area. The reflections of the pool and the shadows created by the jali create a layer of uniqueness. The jali brick wall is used for the facade of the house where a small porch has been created. The antique door inside the house is adorned on either side with large stone sculptures. A wall seperates the two bedrooms from the rest of the common area to create a private space. This wall is used as a wall of memorabilia - where elements and antiques are kept for display. The small passage between the two room creates a unique library for a quite read in the open.
architecture + interior holiday home design (2017)
Holiday homes or cabins are a retreat for people to break away from the daily routine and confined spaces. One wants to be surrounded by nature.
Over waters is a holiday home which is a minimalist linear glass box which bridges over a river. The space is created to have minimal walls to create a feeling of openness. Creating a direct contact with nature, a feeling of floating over the water. A feeling of being amidst nature yet in the comforts of luxury.
Emphasis is given to create a natural forest feel and the earthy natural feeling of the veneer brings out the essence of the forest - a blending of the inside space with the outside. Two blocks are created for the bathrooms and are strategically placed in the center so that at no point the view of the outside is blocked from any part of the cabin. The idea of using glass was to create a sense of living amongst greenery and break-away from the concrete jungle atmosphere. Creating a space where movement is not restricted.
Architecture + interior Hotel lobby design (2019)
As one enters this hotel property, one is led to a pathway surrounded by water body. The calming water body surrounded by lush green trees is just a teaser, a distraction to what lies beyond. The pathway leads to a huge black tent like structure. This triangular structure is a tunnel to what lies at the other end. As one enters this structure there is a sense of intimidation and a feel of grandeur at the same time, due to the height and the use of dark black dyed veneer on the sloping roof. The long tent like tunnel draws the visitors inside and suddenly exposed to the most breath taking view where the sky meets the ocean. The space acts as a transition teleporting the guests from the outside world to this breathtaking view.
Right in the center of this huge structure hangs a layered ring chandelier above the reception table, which acts a central focus. The reception table adorned by the same black veneer has a layered lighting, throws a glow to highlight the veins of the veneer. The yellow color pop of chairs used for the waiting area is a nice contrast to the big black roof and diverts the people to look out over the water body and green plants beyond. The white pathway is separated by the waiting area by a glowing white pebbled patch. At the reception, on either side the doorway leads the visitors to their respective villas.
The hotel lobby is designed as a significant structure, an entry to a luxury hotel with a fantastic ocean view. Emphasis has been given to the lobby structure as a standalone entry way where as one enters the hotel, they are transported into a complete different experience shut away from the hustle bustle of the outside and into a clear calm space where all one can see in the sky meeting the ocean.
The triangular structure of the lobby has been inspired by a camping tent, where the focus is the view.
